Canon Strengthens Leadership in Consumer Imaging
with Biggest-ever Product Launch
Advanced technology makes image creation, manipulation and presentation
easy
Key Points:
- Canon continues to lead the consumer imaging market with 28 new products
in Q1 2003;
- Integrated digital imaging solutions for home users, SOHO and professional
photographers;
- Range covers film and digital cameras, lenses, video cameras, printers,
scanners and MFDs;
- Digital photography and photo printing to drive Canon's growth in 2003.
Canon Australia today showcased its largest ever introduction of consumer
imaging products to the Australian market in a single launch, marking
an aggressive move to grow its position as the leader in digital imaging.
The 28 new products embody Canon's philosophy of using advanced technology
and design to produce devices that are easy-to-use and easy to use together
for amateur, SOHO and professional markets.
"Canon is already Australia's market leader in consumer imaging,
holding number one market share in ink jet printers, scanners, SLR film
cameras, SLR digital cameras, and digital still cameras," said Stuart
Poignand, Marketing Manager, Consumer Imaging Product Group, Canon Australia.
"We've done this by offering best of breed technology at every step
of the imaging process - creation, manipulation, management and presentation
- from input to output."
Canon Australia achieved record sales revenues in 2002 of A$725 million,
partly due to significant growth in the consumer imaging market. This
success is expected to continue in 2003 with the launch of more than 80
new models throughout the year, and the 28 new products showcased today
represent the largest collection of Canon consumer products to be introduced
to the Australian market at a single launch.
"The biggest driver in Canon's growth strategy for 2003 is digital
photography, although digital video and multifunctional devices are also
major categories that we are aggressively targeting. The most exciting
development in digital imaging is direct photo-printing - a user doesn't
need a computer to capture the moment and print their memories,"
said Mr Poignand.
The release of the new product range coincides with Canon's new company-wide
brand re-positioning campaign to be launched later this month under the
tagline of "Advanced Simplicity". Research shows that customers
at all levels are demanding the most advanced technology that delivers
the best possible results, and is also easy to use.
"Our approach to the Australian market is about more than products,"
explained Mr Poignand. "It's also about making these products naturally
work together through an integrated design approach and providing the
supporting software that brings it to life. But more importantly it's
about creating an environment that puts digital creativity within everybody's
reach for everyone from the first-time user to the sophisticated needs
of professional photographers and graphic designers.
Imaging revolution
"Canon Australia is celebrating its 30th year of operation in 2003
and we've seen great technological changes over the last three decades.
Over the last two years, however, there has been a fundamental revolution
in imaging and the way that people have gained control over the entire
imaging process, from capture to output. The Canon products showcased
today reveal the latest developments in imaging technology and deliver
an overall 'capture-to-print' experience unique to the Canon brand,"
added Mr Poignand.
R&D is a major factor behind Canon's success in creating superior
technology, with Australian R&D playing a key role in developing supporting
software for Canon's imaging products. Every digital camera and photo
quality printer sold by Canon globally is packaged with PhotoRecord software,
developed by Canon Information Systems Research Australia (CiSRA) as an
easy way to make and print attractive digital photo albums. The latest
release of digital video cameras will be packaged in Australia with Video
Presenter V.2, sophisticated software also developed by CiSRA, to quickly
create and edit home videos.
Technology highlights for Q1 2003:
Bubble Jet Printing: Completely new technology has
been introduced in four of the five new Bubble Jet products, with the
highlight benefits being the best image quality possible at the fastest
speed, in either text or high-quality photo mode. The i850 flagship printer
illustrates both concepts by offering true photo quality and high performance.
Digital Still Cameras: Canon aims to cement its leading
position in the market in 2003 through the launch of five new digital
cameras. The products further support Canon's goal of providing the best
image through superior lens technology and Canon's exclusive DIGIC image
processor technology, combined with high megapixel rating across the range.
The EOS 10D digital SLR camera, the stand-out camera at the recent PMA
show in Las Vegas, makes high performance digital photography more accessible
to more people.
Digital Video Cameras: The DV market will be a major
focus for Canon in 2003 with products combining the best lens and processing
technologies to deliver the best results. The Q1 launch includes four
new models: three in the MV600i series that offer style, functionality
and high image quality at a powerful entry level price, while the MV150i
is a high-megapixel DV camera.
Scanners: Canon sells more scanners in Australia than
all other competitors combined. The March launch includes new ultra-compact
LiDE models for desktop use, as well as two high-performance film-capable
units designed for the growing number of users who need to digitally archive
their photos.
MFDs: Multifunctional Devices, together with digital
video cameras, are one of Canon's major growth categories for 2003, and
combine Canon's leading scanning, printing and copying technologies in
an all-in-one unit. The new MPC190 model for example, combines Canon's
best of breed multi-function technology, available at a lower price than
before, and expands the MFD range to six models.
Film cameras: The release of five new compact film
cameras is Canon's largest-ever single film product launch, and shows
that Canon remains fully committed to the film business and is keen to
maintain its leadership at every level of photography.
